Maligaon, May (FD) The New Bongaigaon (NBQ) Workshop under Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has been consistently delivering outstanding results in the areas of coach and wagon overhauling, infrastructure innovation and energy efficiency. A series of recent initiatives reflect the workshop’s proactive approach to enhancing operational reliability, passenger comfort and sustainability. One of the significant upgrades at the NBQ Workshop is the installation of the D-Cal Cutting Plotter Machine. This machine has replaced the conventional screen-printing process previously used for coach side and end wall lettering. While screen-printed labels tend to become shabby and fade over
time, the D-Cal system offers a more durable and aesthetically pleasing alternative. This not only improves the visual appeal of the coaches but also enhances their long-term maintenance standards.
Another crucial development is the overhauling of the Electro-Pneumatic Pressurized Flushing System (EPPFS) used in coaches. Earlier, this system had frequent en-route failures and generated complaints from passengers through platforms like Rail Madad. The NBQ Workshop has now implemented a comprehensive overhaul process, including the dismounting and servicing of the water pressurizer unit as well as testing of other critical components like control panels, non-return valves, and air filters. This has significantly improved the reliability and functionality of the flushing systems, especially during long-haul operations.
In a major move towards environmental sustainability, NBQ Workshop has commissioned a 1MW Roof Top Solar Project. Despite weather-related challenges, the average daily generation is estimated at 3850 KWH, translating to an annual generation of approximately 1405250 KWH. With a power purchase rate of Rs 4.30 per unit compared to the Rs 9.39 per unit tariff from the local distribution company, this initiative is expected to yield annual savings of over Rs. 71.5 lakhs, showcasing NBQ’s commitment to energy cost reduction and green initiatives.
Additionally, the workshop has developed an in-house Roof Leaky Test Facility for covered wagons. This shower testing arrangement has significantly improved the detection and rectification of even minor roof leaks and hairline cracks. Wagons are now subjected to this shower test both before and after POH (Periodical Overhaul) ensuring no wagon is released with leakages. This practice ensures structural integrity and safeguards cargo, especially during inclement weather.Through these initiatives, the NBQ Workshop of NFR continues to set high standards in technical excellence, operational reliability, and sustainable practices. These achievements reflect Indian
Railways' broader vision of modernization, enhanced passenger services and environmental responsibility.
